Browns The case for Jameis 2025

OconRecon

If you're juiceless, you're useless
What are your thoughts? Of course, the answer to this question is "let's see how the season plays out".

At this point ...
  • He's only 30 years old
  • He's putting up 300 yard games on the regular
  • Judy and Ced have flourished
  • Running game hasn't gotten going yet to support/balance things out
  • He's PFF's 11th ranked QB. Ahead of Cousins, Purdy, Stroud, Stafford, Tua, and Hurts, among others.
  • Of note, Flacco is 36th
The word is Watson will still he here, but it'll be more of a QB competition rather than handing him the keys. I don't want a true competition, but something like it would be okay.

QB room next spring:
  • Jameis
  • Watson
  • Drafted QB
  • DTR

Seems like a reasonable way to go. Not sure what else we can do tbh.

I see Winston as a solid, cheap bridge to get us through the final Watson years. Not that I think Watson will have any chance of suiting up, but his contract will be felt. Why I really don't want us to draft a 1st Round QB this Draft. But think it is absolutely worth it to shoot a mid-round shot at a guy primarily Stefanski likes and thinks would fit his system.

Go into the season with Jameis on a 2-Year Contract so it will end at the same time as Watson's. Take a kid in the middle rounds, maybe one of the 3rds we have if there is someone worth it there. And then let them compete.

Hard time seeing Jameis not winning that competition. More of the question will be who is no. 2, because there is no way Watson can be that, diva that he is. If the rookie is really impressive, no need to keep DTR unless he is dramatically improved.

You're not getting a starting QB in the 3rd round.
You're most likely not getting a starting QB, and especially an immediate starter. But it is not even something I would call uncommon. It just isn't as likely the way a 1st Rounder is.

Russell Wilson - 3rd Round Pick
Kirk Cousins - 4th Round Pick
Brock Purdy - 7th Round Pick
Dak Prescott - 4th Round Pick
Geno Smith - 2nd Round Pick
Jalen Hurts - 2nd Round Pick
Derek Carr - 2nd Round Pick

So 12% of the current starting QBs were drafted 3rd or after. Almost a quarter were drafted outside the 1st. Like I said, not even something that is uncommon. And what you miss out on likelihood, you make up for in risk. Because if this hypothetical 3rd Round QB fails in Cleveland, no big deal. Not even starting because we have Jameis on a 2-Year. We can try again next year with another mid-round pick, or wait in 2 years when we are capable of financially managing a roster headed by a 1st Round kid QB.

Yeah well you do want to see the stats on how many slug QB's drafted after the 1st round because it would destroy the stats you just showed. I'm not digging through 'em. You need only look at Browns QB's they've drafted.

Anyway, it's something like 50% after the first round ever make it to starting at ANY position. Then again if you believe Derek Carr is the type of starting QB you want you have many options. I'd prefer a consistent year in and year out winning, top 10 QB or better.

In that list I wrote, there are 3 Potential HOFers (Wilson, Hurts, Purdy), 2 Hall of Very Goods (Cousins, Prescott), 1 Solid Starter who's been in the league a long time (Carr), and a Comeback Player of the Year (Smith). I didn't say it was likely our draft pick will turn into one of these guys. I said it was certainly possible and worth a shot given the lack of risk.

I'm going to paint a picture of what the future QB plan can look like for the Browns. I've heard some mention of Drew Allar from Penn State. Surburban Cleveland Kid. 6'5'', 240, AFC North Build.

Certainly has had a solid college career and has improved every year. Probably not enough for the 1st Round, maybe not enough for the 2nd. Not in this day and age because he is limited as a creator. But could there be something there? Absolutely. Because Stefanski's offense doesn't rely on creation. It relies on play action, anticipation, and arm talent.

You Draft Allar. Hoping he can beat out DTR. He backs up and learns for 2 Seasons under Winston. Stefanski's only opportunity to work with a young player like this has been DTR, and I'm not even sure he's NFL material. Maybe Allar is.

By the end of Winston's contract, you allow Stefanski and Berry the opportunity to discuss the option of finally giving Allar a chance or bringing back Winston for a final ride. Along with potentially moving up in the 2027 Draft for a QB they've been studying for years.

You can copy and paste Allar with any other QB this Draft.

I'm a SF way to build a team: assemble a great roster and hope for a decent QB to lead it. I think that's the best way to be relevant year after year.

The KC way is great, but you have to get the QB, and a lot of that is luck. There are only a few. You always try, 1st round or 7th, to strike gold.

I'm thinking a Guard or Center 2nd or 3rd round pick has a far greater chance of starting and being a quality starter than a QB. Particularly if as you said you let him sit for a year or two. We already have DTR as our late round QB were developing anyway and we don't have to develop another late rd QB when he's already here and we could use another OLineman, TE or Safety. And the type of QB we need is a #1 starter which means a high pick in the first round for that.

The reason teams generally have success late is by drafting positions considered less important like Guards, Centers and Safeties and more recently LB's & Rb's. Bitonio in the 2nd round as well as JOK, Chubb and Delpit. Jones in the 4th round and a few others.

You can never have too many QB prospects. But I'm with you: time to start rebuilding the O-Line most pronto. If Cousins is done in Atlanta after this season, we should grab him. Jimmy got lots of money.

That is if Jameis doesn't work out. Got to love the guy. Pulling for him 1000%. He's got the talent. Can he be another Geno?

I'm with y'all that we need to build the roster first. Why I'm not hopping on the annual QB Draft Hype Train this year. But don't forget, we have an extra 3rd from the Amari Cooper trade. We also have a failed QB making 46 mil annually with a 72 mil cap hit, wiping us financially for the next 2 seasons (no Darnold who I'd love here). And the other QB, outside of Winston, is, at best, a Practice Squad level QB who is at no risk of being picked up by another team once he lands there.

We are in need of cheap QBs. We can afford to take the shot. And, frankly, we need to take the shot.

Outside of the 2nd round it gets exponentially harder to find a damn kicker who can start let alone a QB.

SanFran got lucky with Purdy as would any team that gets production from a 7th round pick. They also have a lot of very good players around him too, but they didn't assemble their team and not look for a QB before Purdy. They had traded with BB for Jimmy Garoppolo when they went to the SB in 2019 and last year was with Purdy. McCaffery and Trent Williams were not on the 2019 team either.

If we don't re-sign Winston we'll be looking at trades, Free Agency and the draft to get somebody competent, not named Watson.
