As a journalist, I feel there are a lot of pressing questions which need to be explored yet will not be because the current social awareness of women's issues. These issues are important, and the consequences of being perceived to stand directly against the movements are overwhelming.
But our job requires us to toe the line of recklessness, to seek truth even when it's going to piss people off or cost our organisation money. We should not be swayed by potential implications which could case a ripple effect against social movements or simply wanting to be on the right side of history. There is an important story ongoing in Australia right now regarding potential war crimes committed by Australian defence personnel in the Middle East. Those journalists have been accused of failing to support the military, undermining national security, endangering soldiers whose lives depend on making tough decisions, and more.
You just can't say you want to hold power to account and not question the role of the Buzbee and the Houston Texans in these lawsuits. It isn't hard to connect the dots in a multi-billion dollar organisation trying to destroy a disgruntled superstar who took the rare step in a straight up refusal to be part of the team any longer. You have to question the motives of the women, some of whose actions have been questionable. And you have to question the NFL seeking to punish someone for allegations which remain unfounded and did not hold up in court.
That isn't punching down. It is getting the fact. Even when it is unpopular.
