The " Book It " thread!

Gonna get worse yet before we turn the corner. Need to lock it down for about 4 weeks.

Whatever...if people want to cry apocalypse, I guess we can't stop them with sane conversation. I bet you didn't even go to the website I provided Shep. Take a look, it is educational.

Dawg, I believe I have a sense of what you are about. I’m not on your level, but close enough to have an appreciation for what you do. I found the last column which provides a ratio of the number of reported cases with respect to the total population of a country of particular interest. However, you need to understand that the website deals in raw data that is like Greek to most people. Most people will see nothing but the red column. They generally will not see what you see.

People who use soundbites as an argument irritate me to no end.

Is it going to get worse? HELL YES!!! We are going to end up with over 1 MILLION diagnosed cases, probably thousands of deaths....but it will still be nothing more than a bad year of the flu.

Like I mentioned, the flu had 8,000 deaths last month...with 479 strains....and that is with immunization already in place. It's killing babies as well as old people.

Yes, this is a bad bug. But China, Korea, and to a lesser extend the US have proven it can be mitigated. People panicking...especially people who can afford to stockpile and not work...does nobody any good.

Yes, use social distancing. Yes, self isolate if you think you are sick. Yes, use antiviral wipes/washes. Yes, avoid unnecessary travel and shopping. Yes to ALL those types of preventatives. Exercise. Eat right. Take care of yourself.

But repeating panicked doomsday tripe is not only non-productive, it is a major part of the problem.

As for this administration...sure, they could have acted sooner. Yes, they could be more pro-active. Yes, they could pass the stimulus that will help the common worker. Yes to all of that as well...honestly none of that would have changed the trajectory in any meaningful way. Like I said, in countries with exposure, the US is doing quite well in comparison.

That is why I am frustrated with the media. They give only the bad news...nothing about the positives...and their message is panicking the population into hindering the efforts to assist those in need.

Here is the short version on what I know. It started in China, China denied it, China lied about it, and China threatened us and withheld life and death information. Now the economy is on the verge of collapse.

Meanwhile the mainstream deepstate run media is praising China and taking sides with China. And on top of that the Dems are using this to insert politics into the stimulus package. Despicable

Book that!

Guys, holy shit. You don't think the problem is the administrations well-chronicled suppression that lost us about 5 weeks?! You think it's the press' and the scientists' insistence on dealing in truth? While Trump is on video repeatedly calling it a hoax?

Okay. I'll step away. And yes, for closed cases, outcomes, 13% of those cases have ended in death. It's not a debatable thing, it's just the actual number. This is huge and currently out of control, NYC is about to become a complete nightmare, we have about 1/10th of the ventilators we need, we turned down German's offer of tests for no good reason...

The state and municipal governments (including Ohio) are picking up the slack but Trump gutted the federal government's ability to make it overarching. Really need to get over blaming the free press every time Trump fails this tragically. It's not the whistle, it's the rape we should be concerned with.

And can the GOP ever try to pass anything that ISN'T another attempt to get Laffer's Curve its first win, or at least non-loss? They just can't let that one go, still waiting for something, anything to trickle down.

Just would've been so much better with any other president from either party. This is obviously a very special case and it happened at the very worst time possible.

Ok you are officially an idiot. Back when Trump was implimenting travel bans, y'all were calling him a racist xenaphobe. Before that, you and your liberal politicians were maliciously and without reason trying to impeach him and wasting his valuable time when he could have been focused on the pandemic from it's infancy. Now you and your deep state run media are praising China. You are anti American and a communist. You cannot deny that......

Don’t panic!
Take the precautions as best you can.
the buying of guns
and stock piling toilet paper, hand sanitizer for resale at ridiculous
mark ups should be thrown into germ infested jails and forgotten about!
Scumbags...
MSM has two BS channels I haven’t watched either...
Common sense is all it takes people.

warmer weather

Actually, there is still hope on this front. South of the equator is way better off than us. And speaking of differences, kids are fine. That's much different than the historical "the very old, the very young, and the very sick" of past pandemics.

As of Sunday, Ohio State had tested 1200 patients, with 300 tests results. Of the 300 results, 3 were positive. And of course due to limited testing supplies, only the most symptomatic patients are being tested. So 3 of 300 in the highest probability patients is a mildly good sign.

The isolating is helping, some.
But it's early.
The medical system in Ohio is still bracing for "the surge" as it's now known to be called.

Real data...no spin

Current WORLDWIDE death rate: 4.371%...again, mild cases not being tested in most countries
Current USA death rate: 1.261%...mild cases are being denied testing unless it affects their treatment
Current USA severe/critical rate: 2.296% of active cases, again skewed due to not testing milder cases

Comparatively...this is the CDC on the flu:

Now, answer which one is the true killer

Real data...no spin
Careful.

Real data. Happy to grant that.

No spin? You close the post with "Now, answer which one is the true killer". That's pure spin Dawg and you know it. The other spin? Virologists have been bemoaning the lack of data since this thing sprouted up. The data set you are using is still small and the data gathering practices are haphazard.

My view on this thing is that we simply don't know. So taking either side is just flaunting one's bias. There's no scientific ground to really stand upon.... yet.

Grey....I said the 'data' was no spin.

Didn't say I didn't have an opinion based on that data.

As for the data, I repeatedly point out how inadequate it is. Reality is, the 'flu' numbers are guestimations as well...based on historical guestimations.

Health outcomes are always a bit convoluted because there are too many variables...not just age, but baseline health, environment, social factors, time to treatment, type of treatment...it goes on and on.

The problem I am trying to address is the 'alarmist' tone to pretty much all of MSM in the way they report on this. They stopped talking about the death rate the second it dropped below 4%...and now with it sitting 1.3% or lower, they just go with raw death numbers...because it is scarier. They don't talk about the fact the vast majority of mild/moderate cases are not even tested due to testing parameters. They don't talk about who is ending up in the hospitals.

It is, pure and simple, inflaming the public panic...and I believe it is adversely affecting the ability of the US to react to and treat the people who need it.

Nothing wrong with putting things in context, Grey. Data is data. You suggest that the data set is small and haphazardly gathered. But the same is true for both and the conditions are similar. And here is the thing, one set of data is being essentially ignored while the other (smaller set) is allowed to set national policy. Of course, there is a difference. We know and are familiar with the effects of the flu. We know its limitations. We do not know the full effect of COVID-19. And so we imagine the worst and go into panic mode.

I think Dawg's argument is valid.
