Browns Deshaun Watson - Football Talk

(pre-expanded)

Who wants to play BS media narratives? We'll give it a shot. If Deshaun Watson is no longer good strictly based on his last 6 games, and the #Browns "wasted the worst contract in history," then by that logic, the Ravens did the same with Lamar Jackson.

Lamar Jackson's TOTAL stats in the Ravens last 6 games:
- 3 completions for 11 yards and 2 sacks

That's right. Because he wasn't even on the field for 5 of the last 6 games. But let's look at the last 6 games he actually played:
- 59.6% CMP
- 17.5 completions per game
- 194 yards per game
- 0.83 TDs per game (that's less than 1 for you Ravens fans)

Here are the stats from Deshaun Watson's last 6 games (including the 2nd-coldest game in Browns history):
- 58.2 % CMP
- 16.5 completions per game
- 184 yards per game
- 1.17 TDs per game

Funny how those numbers look very similar despite Lamar Jackson being in his 5th year with the Ravens and playing all season to that point. Meanwhile, Deshaun Watson was new in Cleveland and didn't get 1st-team practice reps with the team until Week 12.

We're sick and tired of the media nonsense, and we'll call it out every time we see it. Let's see how the 2023 season plays out!

What a D.
He ends with, "Good to talk to ya..." and shuffles him off the air.
Another talking head bought and paid for by the NFL and puts out narratives with their stamp of approval.

If this guy goes against any NFL/social narrative publicly it'll be the first.

I think I am with you mmw. Even if we want to give meaning to pro bowl, the last pro bowl for Watson was for the 2020 season. Jackson has played 15 or more games twice, Joe has only done it twice (one could argue should have been selected in 2020), and the other two guys are backups. Now the competition for pro bowl is Patty, Josh, Joe, Lamar (if healthy), Herbert, Rodgers, maybe Tua, and Trevor. That tweet to me is a reach for trying to hype up Watson.

I would suggest watching the entire 13+ minute interview (also radio so pretty much every guest gets the quick goodbye)

If paid by the NFL they wouldn't like Dan ripping in to Goodwill hugging Watson, and really wouldn't like him talking about the Watson off the field at all, and especially at this point. The narrative the NFL wants doesn't involve talking about players off the field misdeads which then reflect poorly on their overall product and can potentially impact revenue.

The NFL has ignored Watson's multiple Pro Bowls. It has never been mentioned on a TV broadcast and we sat and watched all the praise to Rogers and the Jets. Rogers was the reason Zach Wilson has suddenly improved. Even though DTR outplayed Wilson, Watson was given no credit for anything. The Rogers acquisition was good for the Jets so much that the whole damn team is better. Just ask Collinsworth and his partner in the booth as they ignore Watson's accomplishments.

I agree they don't want to talk about Watson's off the field stuff. At least not until the Browns are in the playoffs. Then we'll see that come up along with the drive, the fumble, Art moving the team and hell, might as well throw in JFF and a 38 point Power Point presentation that Shanahan dropped off as he left the building. Sorry. I got into the weeds a little bit there.

When I see these guys all talking the same shit and they all agree on the exact same things, then it's a narrative.

Watson's pro bowls were mentioned when he returned and mentioned by various sports talk show folks. With Watson, until he balls out for the year, it's a tough go for who ever is broadcasting the game. Because of what he did or did not do off the field who ever is covering the game is in a position where no matter what they say about him their is one side or another that's gonna bitch. They don't talk about the off the field or simply perceived as getting too much praise and forgetting what he did/didn't do that there will be a large vocal group making noise and hurting the bottom line. If they lean in to the off the field too much or perceived too much and are not getting giving him his flowers there will be a different large group up in arms and hurting the bottom line. It's a shit shoe until the play on the field over the full season (or close to it) is such that there is no doubt that the praise and focus to just the play are deserved which will minimize the vocal number of folks who still want/are offended by the off the field stuff (become white noise vocally and business impact). As well as the continued passage of time.

The best analogies I can think of are Vick, Ray Lewis, and Jamal Lewis. Each one when they returned from off the field transgressions there folks upset about focus being on the off the field or being on the field. But once their play over the course of that season was such balling out the desire/complaint that the off the field is being washed away becomes smaller. The problem trying to draw any analogies is that social media exists at a level it did not (or not at all) for past similar circumstances.

For the Rodgers comment, I don't know what shows you have been watching or just seeing snippets of, but I haven't seen anyone giving him credit for or much of comments that Wilson has improved. The only thing I saw, heard, or red is about the one pass by Wilson where Rodgers was apparently called that play.

Not sure why during the game broadcast you expected them to be giving Watson for. Rodgers is the bigger/better story from a draw eyes/dollars that Watson is at the moment. And 4 time pro bowler is a bit different that 4 time league MVP, SB MVP, SB winner, 10 time pro bowler, and 4 time first team all pro. Watson even without the off the field stuff would be in the shade when next to Rodgers at this stage of eaches career.

For what it's worth with Watson or pretty much any other player in any sport, when I turn on the game I don't want to see/here just about anything regarding their off the field lives. I tuned in to watch the game.
