It's time to turn the page and begin the hunt for a new QB. #Browns

Sorry player fans. It's time. Baker Mayfield is an average NFL QB, a future journeyman ...and it's time to look at our options. There are only two QBs in the NFL worse than Baker Mayfield in the 4th quarter. We routinely finish in the bottom half in almost every meaningful passing category. There is nothing at all special about him. I used to think he had an elite arm, but a lot of QBs can throw the ball hard. He can certainly throw it, but how well does he pass it really? High, hard, and behind. Rinse and repeat. A large percentage of his completions go that route as well. He has every single weakness he had coming out of college. Nothing at all has improved. In the NFL he isn't chucking up prayers to NFL caliber WRs being covered by guys who are now checking out your groceries. Baker Mayfield is the 4th best QB in the AFC North. Out of 4 teams.

Last place in the division. Most in here predicted outlandish success this season. 12 wins? 14? Maybe more. This blow-hard thought we would likely have less wins than last season, simply due to a historically easy schedule in 2020. The Browns just lost to a team with no kicker, and a fat QB who likely has lower back problems, and runs about as fast as an arthritic sloth. People are now starting to look for new excuses. The new coach is holding the team back. The WRs drop the ball too much. Mean fans are hurting Emily Mayfield's feelings and it's having an effect on Baker's play. The truth is, there's a bottleneck at the QB position. We have a Superbowl caliber roster, and a QB that is limiting what we can do with it. Baker Mayfield is the best QB we have had in twenty years ....and people are desperate to defend him. I get it.

Against the Steelers on Sunday we witnessed something we try really hard to ignore. Baker throwing high and hard the majority of the game. While throwing from the pocket, Baker not only can't see most of the field, but he throws his trademark bullets high enough to get over the defenders standing between he and his receiver. This just doesn't work, as the trajectory of these bullets leave them high and often behind his mark. A difficult ask of WRs, TEs, and RBs. You'll have player fans on twitter showing slow motion replays of a ball going through Hooper's hand, and calling anyone who dares criticize Baker a "mouth breather", but in reality Hooper was at the top of his jump, arms outstretched to the max, trying to reel in a high, hard, and behind football. Could have easily been a walk in touchdown instead... a bad pass. A QB could normally avoid this by putting some touch on the ball, a little arc, or air under it ....but Baker doesn't seem to have that gear.

Mayfield throughout his entire career has made a cottage industry of rolling to his right. It seems to be the one thing he is great at. The problem is, when you are a one-trick pony, other teams game-plan to take that trick away from you. Baker has rolled right and attempted to pass a total of 6 times this year. Think about that in relation to each year prior. Teams have forced Baker into the pocket, the Steelers literally dared the Browns to pass practically the entire game. How is it working out?

Fourth quarter, and another chance to win a game. Most of us knew what was going to happen didn't we? We have held onto hope, praying that the light would go on, that Baker would make wholesale changes, and he would become the Browns franchise QB ...someone we could count on to put the team on his back and lead us to victory with the game on the line. What we have got in reality is a QB that is 33 of 62, with 4 TDs and 5 INTS. Sam Darnold is the only QB as bad as Mayfield with the game on the line since 2018. Mayfield's passing rating with the game on the line is 61.3 and the Browns are 3-11 in these scenarios.

Kevin Stefanski was hired to reign in Mayfield's erratic tendencies. Stefanski's offense tends to turn average QBs into statistical wonders, (Case Keenum) and perhaps limit some players at certain positions, like a downfield QB and burner WR for example. Some argue that Stefanski has taken Mayfield's gunslinger aura away from him, which while true is also the reason why Baker has become far less prone to interceptions. The dink and dunk offense with numerous screens and TE heavy route trees certainly makes a QB look good on paper at times ...but who is Baker Mayfield without the ability to roll out on play action and plant bombs down the field? Certainly these are often 50/50 bombs, but they do add to what an opposing defense has to worry about. Mayfield has 10 completions of 20 or more yards this season ...20th in the league. Recall Stefon Diggs having the same issue that OBJ is currently having in the Stefanski offense. He moved on to the Bills and is back to all-pro form. I suspect OBJ will do the same for some other team.

In short, we have no vertical passing attack, while employing one of the very best WR tandems in the game, and one of the fastest WRs in the league in Schwartz. Did the Browns hire the right coach? If you believe analytics and going by the book is usually right, then yes. If you believe in coaches who base decisions on the ebb and flow of the game, their "gut" as it were, then no. We are the worst team in the league at going for it on 4th down. Analytics got us there.

We could have had Canton native and lifelong Browns fan Josh McDaniels.

So where are we now? A Superbowl caliber roster, with an extremely limited QB, and a coach who can only go by the book, apparently not capable of harnessing whatever "elite" trait Mayfield may have, if he has one at all. Playoffs this season ...not likely. Our Superbowl window is open for only a short while ...without the Browns front office doing something extremely out of character (see, ballsy) like going after a Watson, Wilson, or Rogers ...I don't see us going anywhere.

Allbright saying the Panthers are still the most likely landing spot for Watson, but Seattle, Cleveland and Philly still in the running.

I get the feeling it's going to happen tomorrow. I would assume the acquiring team would like to add Watson prior to legal tampering.

I'm pretty confident it's Watson or Mayfield starting for us in 2022. If we don't get Watson, it's Baker's team. This QB class in the draft just isn't well liked.

What would the asking price be for Watson?

It would have to start with BM and a 1st round pick. After that I'm not sure if we could add another player like Kareem Hunt over another 1st round pick. And I'm thinking of players to offer over another 1st or second round pick. I love Hunt, but he has one more year on his contract and then he's a FA again. The better move for us would be to give them Hooper, but he has no value right now.

The other guy who has value and has one more year left on his contract is Greedy Williams. Another guy I love, but we have Newsome and Ward and we have a competent backup in AJ Green.

The cost will be interesting.

I think that's one reason the Browns are only considered a wild-card for the Watson. The Panthers are in a pretty hopeless position, they'll do anything to get Watson. Our situation isn't as desperate.

If we could get Watson for three firsts, or maybe two first and two seconds plus a player like Hooper: maybe.

I don't think we'll sell the farm. AB won't want to part with too much draft capital.

theres still plenty of unknowns when it comes to watson.the league may suspend him for 6-8 games yet and he could still
possibly be indicted for some other sexual misconduct charges who knows? but these things could soften the texans on a deal.they'll want what Seattle got I'd bet but I would shoot a little lower given all that.
maybe thats the real reason juice wants to renegotiate?I'd offer 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th this year and a 2nd next year with hunt/cooper take your pick. (next years draft is loaded, this years blows)

Super interested in the Watson sweepstakes - personally, I think it's the only move which is a realistic upgrade from Mayfield. It's either Watson, or Mayfield gets 2022.

Anyway;

- Reports (ESPN) indicating Houston want three firsts, other selections and at least one player. Good luck, you've got no leverage to get that. But at least we've got a rough area to work with. The big question is if Mayfield would have any value to Houston - he sure offers more value than Lock or Darnold, so that's something. Another question is if we could add a corresponding move - would Tampa, for example, surrender a pick for Mayfield which we could use in the Watson package?
- Reports Carolina are favourites, but I'm struggling to understand why Watson would willingly join a team with an awful OL and a coach on the hot seat after back-to-back five win seasons.
- Buccs and Browns both apparently interested, and both offer much more attractive situations. Win-now rosters, coaches and GMs which are performing well and unlikely to be fired, and fantastic OL play - well, when we're healthy that is. I just don't know why Watson would choose to waive his no-trade for Carolina.
- The addition of Amari Cooper comes at the right time. While I think the Cooper trade is completely independent of Watson, names like DJ Moore and CMC are being included in a Carolina package while the Browns have "we went and got Amari Cooper in advance to show how serious we are about building around you" on the table. That is one hell of a pitch.

Josina Anderson (CBS) and Will Burge (Barstool Cleveland) are hinting strongly that Watson to the Browns is real. Just minutes ago, Anderson retweeted a Browns fan asking "Is this what you're talking about? please say its something bigger" regarding the Cooper trade - suggesting something bigger, like Watson, is coming.

I don't know. Maybe I'm going crazy on a lazy Sunday, but this kinda feels like it could happen.

If the NFL was trying to railroad the guy then who knows?

if he’s a perv with no self control than this will resurface wherever he goes.

but….. what does he think about living in a place like Cleveland? Or will he be remote like our front office and quarterback?

Let’s here it from Q?

He’s got the inside scoop on this man since before he was drafted.

what say you QtC

The guy was a model citizen at Clemson. Literally, as up-standing as one could possibly be. The attorney leading the charge is a huge Houston Texans fan, who lives next to the owner of the Texans, and was pissed when Watson said he wanted out...that much we know to be true. He was accused of sexual misconduct (not sexual abuse...two very different things). Sounds like the guy likes his butt hole fingered and, as a lot of rich, powerful men do, might have asked a few randoms to oblige. Weird that every woman works in a specific profession...and the profession in question is known for prostitution. Weird how they all threatened to, and did, expose embarrassing information after they attempted for a settlement. Is he out there assaulting women? No. That was never the accusation. Did he ask prostitutes...errrr massage therapists for freaky stuff? Sure. Shooters shoot. Who cares?

I have multiple friends who are DA's. The bottom line is that they said if a DA wants a trial, they grand jury will find the evidence. DA's want trials when they know they can win. They are graded on wins...period. There wasn't any real evidence here...or the GJ would have voted for a trial. This was a case of extortion and everyone of those women and the attorney should be charged with extortion.

Cleat chasers are going to chase athletes. Some athletes (and men) like freaky stuff. Some cleat chasers are looking for a pay day. When a sleaze ball attorney sees a chance at hurt the player who is going to hurt his favorite team, and a payday, he pounced. Cleat chasing prostitutes were happy to oblige. And don't site the number of women as evidence of anything. 22? Hell, I'm not even an athlete and I've slept with way more than 22 women who can now say anything they want, true or not, if an attorney told them they can get paid.

Bottom line, he is a dude who likes freaky shit. Is he some abusing deviant? No. Would he be an upgrade over Baker? Abso-freaking-lutely. The Browns would be instant Super Bowl contenders with Watson under center. Add Cooper, another FA (Chark, Kirk, Gage) and Wilson or Burks in the draft and couple that passing attack with our run game (chubb and hunt) we would be a seriously scary team on offense.

But take all of the above with a grain of salt and form your own opinions. But those acting like Watson is some bad guy and they don't want him on their team are just dumb. Not too mention the second he starts winning games and goes to the playoffs...those same idiots will be in their Brown and Orange cheering for him and the Browns like crazy.

The Patriots owner had a similar situation arise when he was busted in Fla and he got off the hook so why shouldn't Watson? I'd work to get Watson here, but there's also his contract. It looks pretty damn good for any team right now. $35 mil this year and $20 mil next year.

Then it's $32 mil in 2024 with a zero cap hit if he leaves and $32 mil in 2025.

Wait a minute. We gave up our fifht and swapped our sixth pick?

If we had to have our 6th pick then I'm guessing we're going to draft that punter who puts the ball 60 yards in the air and drops it on a dime with the 6th pick.

It's too quiet. None of the top analysts have tweeted in 15 hours, and the legal tampering window is like 24 hours away. I understand it's only mid-morning over there, but that's interesting to me.

When reporters go quiet, it typically means they're busy trying to get the details on something big.

I'm probably totally wrong, but I have a feeling that the Watson news is going to break today.

I doubt Watson or any of his alleged suitors want to have this drug out into the start of Free Agency.

100 per cent.

Firstly - adding Watson is going to cost whoever gets him some serious picks. They're going to want to address needs in free agency with moves they may not make without Watson.
Secondly - adding Watson is the kind of move which makes guys want to play for your team. You want to add him before free agency so you can benefit from his presence luring in other players.
Thirdly - His presence dominating the news cycle is quick. Get it out prior to free agency, survive the onslaught of criticism which will come, an watch the headlines move on to the free agent signings the following day.

The only thing I wonder is if teams are trying to get some form of word from the league if Watson will face any form of suspension. That will factor in to his value.

But, yeah, I think the deal gets made today too.

I am sure some team will pull it of to trade for him.
The media might get messy but really the are just hypocritical jerks.
I wonder if no one trades for him, if the Texans will release him and sign with another team for another team and everyone is happy in the end.

I don't think anything will occur with Watson today. You are probably spot on about that a bit of this is just immediate media speculation based on Friday grand jury results.

Zero chance HOU ever outright releases Watson. Aside from the 51M cap hit HOU would take no team outright releases a QB like Watson.
