The " Book It " thread!

Music Music I hear Music

I basically took that approach in the beginning. I stayed at home as instructed and asked my kids and grandkids to stay away; I ordered groceries online and had Walmart load them into the trunk of my car.

However, as the two weeks "to slow the spread" evolved into a 30 day extension I began to change my tune. I decided it was worth taking the chance in order to see my grandkids and I preferred my grocery substitutions to the ones I got from Walmart.

I still avoid the grocery store as much as possible and I have worn a mask every time I have visited any store. I still visit the drive through mainly for food, but my wife and I have gone out to eat several times during the past month and have enjoyed it. We wear masks until the food arrives and put the masks back on after dinner. In a way, it seems like closing the barn door after the horse has left the premises, but it is the rule and we follow the rules.

There has been something of a surge here in Oklahoma in both new cases and death in the past month although not on the order of other southern states. Unlike some of those, I don't have much hope for a relatively strong herd immunity in my state. But even a weak herd immunity that might help end the current surge would be welcome.

What I miss is Live music. local clubs, national acts mostly Jazz. none of that's happening.
I already missed being rich enough(pre 2008) to go down to LA area and Party down. Trump hasn't fixed that.

I don't want to back in a the grocery store till this is over. last time in early March seeing those empty shelves shocked me for life. exposed my White Privilege.
the substitutions I figured out early on. till two weeks back when they over ruled my NO substitutions. WTF
I asked a girl about it the other day picking up, she blamed some higher up bitch. kinda strange This girl gave me some free stuff. I tossed some of it back. I would not of ever used.

It is so hard to understand a disease with results of infection ranging from asymptomatic to devastating illness and death. Unfortunately, it has made contract tracing largely ineffective without extensive and timely testing. And even then, it is hit and miss.

I guess I am thankful for any therapeutic that helps people survive the virus, but it is hard to get excited for anything less than an effective vaccine against this scourge.

Done very little looking at Sweden over this journey.

Neither had I except in passing until that open letter from the Swedish doctors. The funny thing about the letter is that it came out shortly after the graph for new cases had taken a decidedly unexpected downward turn. I suppose the biggest surprise was the speed of the descent. In less than a couple of weeks, the number of new infections was cut in half as it continued its downward path.

This was unlike other examples of possible herd immunity such as has occurred in Spain, Italy, UK and New York in which the descent in each case was much more gradual.

I guess I will always wonder why the 25 Swedish scientists and doctors waited until after the number of cases had dropped so drastically before issuing their letter. The weeks before the quick descent would have been met with more agreement. Now we have a full blown debate on herd immunity. See the following Political article:

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/07/24/sweden-catches-first-glimpse-of-herd-immunity-381117

“We are clearly at levels which are very significant,” lead epidemiologist Anders Tegnell told reporters at a news briefing on Tuesday. “The reduction we are now seeing speaks strongly in favor of a very large immunity in the population.”

One of the things to note is that the immunity rate due to infection by the virus never approaches 100%. In Italy, for example, they still have about 200 new cases per day. In the UK, it is around 800 cases per day. There has actually been resurgence of the virus in Spain recently. After being in the range of 200 cases per day for a couple of months, they are back around 1500 new cases per day. New York has been in the range of 800-1000 cases per day for the past month. I think it is a case of the virus never being quite successful enough to eradicate itself in a mobile society. Instead, it reaches a point of equilibrium consistent with the degree of mobility of the society in which it is infecting.

Sans vaccine, I am of the opinion that a similar point of equilibrium would eventually be achieved all over the world, and flare-ups would occur and die out with or without intervention. I think it is actually the natural state of affairs. Indeed, it is as close to Darwinism as you are ever likely to get. Hopefully, a vaccine can give us a better natural state of affairs.

This is a Melbourne problem mostly. not slowing yet. that phone app didn't work for them they say. sad...... they almost had it gone.

Unfortunately, Australia is virgin territory for the virus.

I noticed while on the site you linked that a couple of Australian government officials will be visiting Washington soon:

Australian Government ministers Marise Payne and Linda Reynolds to fly to US during coronavirus pandemic

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-07...et-pandemic-defence/12490078?section=politics

Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Defence Minister Linda Reynolds will fly to Washington for annual talks with their US counterparts next week, forcing both frontbenchers into quarantine on their return to Australia.

Key points:
The ABC has been told the decision to travel was "not taken lightly" by the ministers
The US ambassador said it would be "one of the most consequential AUSMIN meetings in decades"
Pompeo warned "if the free world doesn't change Communist China, Communist China will change us"
It will be the first overseas visit by Morrison Government ministers since Australia shut its international borders in March.

Senator Payne and Senator Reynolds will meet US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defence Secretary Mark Esper to discuss national security and coordinating government responses to the coronavirus pandemic.

One question I have: According to the article, Payne, Reynolds and other senior officials will spend 14 days in quarantine when they return to Australia.

Why not a test for the virus instead upon their return to Australia? I am sure that they will be tested here before meeting with counterparts, Pompeo and Esper. I am sure also that Pompeo and Esper will rely on testing as opposed to quarantine both before and after their meetings.

14 day incubation period ..........you knew that answer.

The Pompeo speech @ Nixon Library was a powerful, eyeopening one.
You watch or read it ?

14 day incubation period ..........you knew that answer.

An incubation period of 14 days was assumed to be a reasonable estimate of the incubation period based on early research that indicated that 97.5% of people infected would develop symptoms within 11.5 days. Thus it was felt that 14 days was a reasonable estimate as a safe period of quarantine to assume that a person was free of the disease despite exposure sans testing.

With the availability of testing, I would have assumed that only people with the disease would need to be quarantined. Do they really still quarantine people who test negative for the disease?

I watched it the other night and have since read most of it. It seems likely to be a cornerstone of American policy in a second term if Trump is reelected. It undoubtedly won't be the policy if Biden is elected--which now seems likely.

Death to America

They do there. even for interstate travelers.

Here I've noted the NBA is using 4 days for persons who leave "The Bubble".
yet to hear any official saying anything other than 14 days. but I can't know everything.

That would Kill more of us than the virus.

Okay, I understand a 4 day quarantine. There is such a thing as a false negative immediately after exposure. I have noticed that the NFL in their initial testing plan to test twice with a day between presumably to eliminate the gap between exposure and a test reveal. It makes sense to quarantine during that period. Same thing if a person has a "close contact" with a person testing positive. That type of protocol makes sense.

So I guess no change... yet ?

Speeding this up in sports circles might be just.. their gamble. See MLB ..LOL

I believe the 4 day quarantine requirement for the NBA that you earlier mentioned is in conjunction with testing. Otherwise, it makes no sense. If testing is not available, a 14 day self quarantine is appropriate.

If I, as a private citizen, were to make a trip abroad or, for that matter, to another state, it would be appropriate for me submit to a test or self quarantine for 14 days.

The advisory you linked was from a private company and was dated June 18. Testing may not be available to everyone in every state and or in every country. I happen to live about a mile away from a drive in test site and if I were returning from out of state, I would most likely schedule an appointment for a test to avoid an extended self quarantine.

I would have assumed that testing to avoid the extended quarantine would be standard procedure for high government officials.

Yep thus the 5 weeks.
I can't find anything less than 14 days officially. You ?

Protocol in returning to NBA after virus is 2 negative tests. in 48 hours I think.

We know government officials....Live by all matter of Different rules.

As I understand it, with the requirement of a day between two tests to insure that the test is not before the onset of the presence of the virus in the nose that the test would detect, the quarantine period might theoretically involve as little as 24 hours, but depending on the situation such as timing and location, it might be as much as 72 hours or maybe even more if a team is traveling. They have to be in a situation where a controlled quarantine between the two tests is possible.

Might be more like an extra two week vacation than a quarantine. A quarantine on a private beach with family would, of course, be ideal. :)

10 day quarantine for Lou Williams. now
That's just for leaving the Bubble.

The length of the quarantine might have more to do with visiting the gentlemen's club than simply leaving the bubble.
