The " Book It " thread!

Kayleigh’s first briefing as WH press secretary

In my opinion, she blew them away.

This is music to my ears:

"Trump grants 'Operation Warp Speed' a blank check to develop vaccine, source says"

https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/01/politics/donald-trump-vaccine-operation-warp-speed/index.html

The goal -- which may prove impossible to meet -- is to make 100 million doses of the vaccine available by November, 200 million doses by December and 300 million doses by January, a senior administration official said.
"When the President was asked, 'What do you want to put into it?' He said, 'No limit,'" the official said.

But we don't have to rely on CNN's sources. Trump himself is out front on this:

"Whatever you can humanly do, we're going to have," Trump said. "We're going to fast-track it like you've never seen before, if we come up with a vaccine."

And, surprise, surprise! Mad, Dr. Fauci is onboard :):

But "Operation Warp Speed" -- a name that was chosen by the scientists working on it, who are Star Trek superfans -- is also working on all the challenges that surround vaccine deployment. They are already working on solutions to quickly ramp up production, organize distribution and determine who gets the first doses of the vaccine.

"You don't wait until you get an answer before you start manufacturing -- you at risk proactively start making it, assuming it's going to work, and if it does, then you can scale up and hopefully get to that timeline," Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, told NBC on Thursday. "So we want to go quickly, but we want to make sure it's safe and it's effective. I think that is doable."

To be frank, I really don't care how much it costs. This virus is holding up a multi-trillion dollar economy. What is a few millions or even billions in an effort to save lives and get back to living?

Moderna could begin manufacturing unproven coronavirus vaccine in July, CEO says

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/01/mod...ven-coronavirus-vaccine-in-july-ceo-says.html

Last month, Moderna announced it received a $483 million contract from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority to accelerate the development of its vaccine candidate. Shares of Moderna rose more than 15% on the news. The company’s shares were up more than 6% in early trading Friday.

The vaccine uses synthetic messenger RNA to inoculate against the virus. Such treatments help the body immunize against a virus and can potentially be developed and manufactured more quickly than traditional vaccines.

Who knows. This might be a breakthrough or it may be a good way to waste $483 million dollars. Apparently the CEO convinced Trump he had a shot. Here is a video from CNN:

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TddfLvAeTqQ" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Moderna Is '6 Months Ahead of Everyone Else,' Jim Cramer Says

https://www.thestreet.com/streetlig...e-else-jim-cramer-says-seayplE6QEWUi3Y1mHtytg

However, it seems to me that I also read where the Oxford vaccine is aiming for this fall too. We shall see.

****************

Yeah, here it is:

Oxford scientists say a vaccine may be widely available by September

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/coronavirus-vaccine-september-oxford-university/

The vaccine takes the coronavirus' genetic material and injects it into a common cold virus that has been neutralized so it cannot spread in people. The modified virus will mimic COVID-19, triggering the immune system to fight off the imposter and providing protection against the real thing.

The experimental vaccine has reportedly worked in protecting rhesus macaque monkeys that were exposed to heavy quantities of COVID-19.

*****************

If I had to bet on one or the other, I would probably go with the Oxford concept. They have animal studies that indicate a likelihood of success. The Moderna effort is skipping animal studies and going directly to human trials.

China holds the patent on the drug through an agreement with Gilead’s drug patent sharing subsidiary branch called UNITAID, who has an office near Wuhan and you’ll never guess who are the main financial investors in UNITAID....none other than George Soros, Bill & Melinda Gates, and WHO. I know what your thinking! It’s just all a coincidence isn’t it! Oh, don’t let me forget the other coincidence that Gilead and UNITAID were financial supporters of Hillary Clinton. Oh, silly me I forgot one more coincidence....Fauci was the one authorizing millions to be sent to The Wuhan Institute of Virology specifically for the “study” of Coronaviruses......I sure am thankful it’s all just coincidences! Nothing to see here just keep moving along....

DK, I don't know about much of all this, but I would mention that Remdesivir is hardly a "CURE" for COVID-19.

In double blind clinical trials, Remdesivir reduced hospital stays for COVID-19 patients from 15 to 11 days (31%) and may also have improved mortality rates slightly. I have been given to understand that it does this by suppressing an enzyme that the coronavirus uses in replicating itself. However, the main reason for excitement about Remdesivir is the proof of concept which may eventually result in the development of other, perhaps more effective, drugs of the same type (that target other enzymes).

But the main action (and hope) will be with the development of a vaccine.

I am of the opinion that civil disobedience
Is part of the American fabric and I whole heartedly
support it but the moment you approach a state
Capitol with firearms should be prepared to be shot
themselves.

Why does this national pandemic have to bring out
the worst in people rather than focus on the first
responders who have given there lives to ease the
suffering of others in this, the most desperate of times.

I live in a shutdown state but it hasn’t stopped me from
going about my business or stay inside if that’s what I
choose to do do.
My brother and wife in Ohio have been forced to work
or go try and get unemployment and both places of employment
have had covid cases, is that right?

Forcing Americans to work in the food industry regardless of the
consequences isn’t a good thing for the employee’s or American
consumers, sure you can cook food to kill viral contamination
but you first have to buy the package unpack it and handle it
as well as deal with the waste all the while trying to avoid getting
sick trying to cook a meal.

Numbers being reported are only coming from the tested and the dead.

There is zero reason to accept that these are a true accounting
of how bad this could be.
Current test kits have had both false negatives as well as false
positives on the same person!

Please don’t get all defensive because I’m in no way trying to be
political, I’m just speaking on matters of concern I have with what’s
being done or not being done, just saying it’s declining doesn’t make
it so.
It’s encouraging to look at how current numbers of infected and the dead
have slowed quite a bit and it’s easy to confuse that with “it’s over” rather
than distancing and folks who have stayed home and or selected numbers
of cases not being reported for what they really are.

It’s your life to live and how you choose to live it but when a persons individual
decisions impact the person next to you with sneezing coughing and careless
behavior can get you sick or possibly kill you that’s something we all need to be
aware of.
Just my observations and yes Cliff the virus can be traced to Wuhan, not China
kinda like America/ Canada type of distance but same totalitarian governments.

I don't support guns as part of civil protests. But these are people who are protesting because they have been forced out of their jobs and want to work. They are a minority that nobody seems to care about. So called essential workers make up 70% to 80% of the working population, but what about the 20% to 30% who have been told to go home and stay inside? Some of these people were involved in lawn care and other similar outside occupations that have nothing whatever to do with the spread of the virus, but have nevertheless been told that they can't work because their jobs are nonessential and they must go home and stay inside.

While I want people like your brother and his wife to be able to work safely, my sympathy resides mainly with the nonessential workers who have lost their livelihoods and may never get their lives back. I know a young woman who had a used bookstore. You can discount her pain if you want, but that used bookstore was her life and now it is gone--probably forever--because the government told here she had to close it. Because her income disappeared, she couldn't pay the rent. She will try to recover with an online business, but if that doesn't succeed, she has essentially lost everything.

Forcing Americans to work in the food industry regardless of the
consequences isn’t a good thing for the employee’s or American
consumers, sure you can cook food to kill viral contamination
but you first have to buy the package unpack it and handle it
as well as deal with the waste all the while trying to avoid getting

Nobody is forced to work in the food industry or any industry. Those people can quit their jobs anytime they want. The government can tell the corporations they must stay open, but nobody is forced to work. My opinion is that they should be thankful they still have a job. My sympathy is with people who were told to go home and stay inside because their job was nonessential.

Numbers being reported are only coming from the tested and the dead.

There is zero reason to accept that these are a true accounting
of how bad this could be.
Current test kits have had both false negatives as well as false
positives on the same person!

And there are people in food lines because they are hungry. And if we don't get people back to work, it will only get worse.

Please don’t get all defensive because I’m in no way trying to be
political, I’m just speaking on matters of concern I have with what’s
being done or not being done, just saying it’s declining doesn’t make
it so.

And I suppose you would suggest more of the same?

But what we are doing is causing great harm not only to our country and our way of life, we are doing it to the healthcare industry itself. Because we went for increased capacity of hospital beds expecting a surge that never materialized in most states, the government told hospitals to stop doing elective surgeries. If we don't reverse that quickly, we will have hospital closures. Already hospital staff are being furloughed. Does any of this make sense?

This is in addition to millions of lives ruined from these and other arbitrary government actions of the past 6 weeks. Maybe there was some justification for what we did in the beginning, but it seems that some governors have become intoxicated with their power. With relative safety, we can put the nonessential part of the population back to work.

It’s your life to live and how you choose to live it but when a persons individual
decisions impact the person next to you with sneezing coughing and careless
behavior can get you sick or possibly kill you that’s something we all need to be

Dan, that seems to indicate that you are under the mistaken belief that Wuhan is a country adjacent to China (as you said: "kinda like America/ Canada"). If so, let me point out that Wuhan is a city of about 11 million people in central China. So if the virus originated in Wuhan (and, of course, it did), it also originated in China.

Not that I would do the same. at this time.
But when would be a better time ? ..... next Monday ?

These are the times we have the second amendment for. She has gone tooo far.

No one is forced to work.
Forcing Americans to work in the food industry
No one is forced to work.

I get your point. when this stay at home started 4,500 known cases 88 deaths.
now there is nearly a million known people with it.... maybe out and about. this is crazy times.

Just me ?

Am I the only person to stay home the past 45 days ? (3-16 to 5-1) I feel that way.
did go to the mail box at the end of road last month.

Because I'm old I guess I needed to go to the bank. put it off for a month or so. I went Friday. they said I needed a appointment due to the lobby being closed. when I talked to them they said I would be the only person inside.

Got there 15 minutes early. as I waited I noted it was kinda busy. more so than most times I had been there the past 10 years. but it seemed like one person out another in. atm busy. 2 young guys crowding a older woman there. she seemed uncomfortable.

3pm my appointment time I called told them to give me a couple minutes to put on my PPE. I looked like one of those people with the long Q tip reaching into a car window. the personal were not ready to do the job I needed. they took their sweet time like it was 2019 or 1990.

I stood there for over 30 minutes. sweating the last 15. there had to be half dozen more people come in after me, while I stood there. the tellers with no masks, one I seen the whole time with no gloves. nightmare.

Heck I performed some IT work helping the person working on what she said was a new system. get this... she was asking glove less girl for help, as it was kicking her when she entered zero in some areas I didn't need. she was of no help walked away.
I tell her to enter 1... magic it worked.. she thanked me.

It's about 4 mile one way trip. the traffic was about 40-50% of normal. there are few pedestrians here normally. it looked like it was just another day, where they are normally seen they were there. mostly not masked. one young fellow had a mask hanging from his neck.

That's my report.

Now waiting the next 13 days hoping I didn't fuck up.

I agree you are not “forced To work” but the only other option
most employees have is to quit and go on unemployment.
you would think there should be better options than that plus
as in my brothers case he was told to consider unemployment
His severance.
So yeah people are being forced to work or join the other thirty
million people who are now out of work.
I always notice with you Cliff is that if you can point to anything
that you can point eliminates the rest of the post and dismissed
do you always feel the need to be so pompous?

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/04/28/trump-to-order-meat-plants-to-stay-open-215555

Get off your asses and demand to go back to work!!!

Can no one see what’s happening here? Never in history has the world shut down for an invisible enemy...

Be smart, wash your hands use common sense.

Masks? Please fear mongering unless your in full PPE with proper gear. N95 by itself is not gonna save the world. Cloth masks are 0% effective except if your ugly.

What is the greater good? What is the greater evil?

Mad, I really don't see a reason for the extreme caution. I understand that if Las Vegas was open, it would probably be almost as dangerous as living in New York. The difference is that the vast majority of workers in New York are considered essential and thus continue to move around on the subways and in and out of the airports thus infecting each other as well as the nation with the virus. However, I would imagine that most people in Las Vegas and Reno are considered nonessential and thus in lock down.

The state of Nevada has reported a total of 5,311 cases of COVID-19. Of those 5,311 cases, 2,149 are still active. Since the population of Nevada is about 3 million, that represents about one active case of the disease in about 1400 people. Thus you have about a .071% chance of coming in contact with a person having the disease in Nevada. (It is actually less than that unless you regularly visit hospitals and nursing homes.)

I would guess that it is probably more dangerous for you to walk to the mailbox from passing vehicles than your visit to the bank.

China did throw a net over Wuhan-I’m not as ignorant as you think Cliff,
and even then China DID become infected itself, this is no joke.

Yes-I want all food production to stop for a minimum one week to
clean and disinfect our food supply companies and to properly take care of those
workers who test positive, not much to askwhen you consider the risks of not
doing it.
Second amendment my ass,you come onto federal soil with a AR-15 in hand would
be considered a hostile act and should be shot on site.
Way to many people are shooting up public places because mommy didn’t love them.

Lastly testing is almost impossible to get nor are they definitive and I don’t trust those
Numbers at all when you are only counting those tested or dead.
In Philadelphia they used the Phillies baseball parking lot for testing and it shut down
in three days(ran out of tests), testing is available if you pay to park and stand in line in various office
buildings, social distancing doesn’t work so well in enclosed spaces and recirculated
air.

I would have no issue with protesting to re-open if that was what it was about. And I think Rural areas should re-open. I'll only speak for my state, Oregon. Our protests were just an Alt-Right rally. Even our local bigot, waiting for trial, Joey Gibson was a keynote speaker. If you were a worker that was hoping to protest the state closures you were just duped into going to a recruitment meetup for a bunch of Alt-Right bigots. It's really too bad. If they could just be smart enough to hide the actual agenda they might have been taken seriously by our state government.

QAnon and Trump signs
guns
no masks
no social distancing
no hot chicks

I'm just thankful I received $1,000 a week (prepaid Visa cards) from George Soros. He's paying everyone for Fakebook memes, connecting Trump to Russia, and an anti-gun agenda that will take gun rights away from every American. :roflmao:

Seriously though, this might be the worst year of all our lives and maybe the worst is still to come. When I see pictures of China they are wearing masks. Not homemade shit. Masks that their government provided. With everything we think we have done we still will hit 70,000 dead sometime this week. We want to re-open with no meaningful additional testing and actual masks available. So many things could have been better but our leaders stepped in shit and walked around the house with it hoping it will just go away. Clearly, no plan exists.

My understanding is that China was able to limit the spread of the virus to the rest of China by essentially sealing off the city of Wuhan from the rest of China and not allowing domestic flights out of Wuhan to the rest of china. However, they continued to allow international flights out of Wuhan after they knew they had a problem in Wuhan.

My inclination would be to allow the state health departments of the several states handle any problems they may have in the food supply companies within their state. I think they know best what needs to be done to safeguard the food supply.

Like I said before, I do not support the use of guns as part of civil protests. But I certainly support civil protests. This is a constitutionally protected right of citizenship. And if you don't care about constitutionally protected rights, I do. And seriously, Dan, are you proposing murder by the state?

And you can say what you will, I have more confidence in Dr. Birx than HuffPost and so forth and my understanding is that our testing capability is currently expanding significantly, and will be more than adequate for the requirements of the phased opening. In a mere week, the number of tests actually performed by the states grew from 5,279,237 to 6,931,132. And the rate of testing is growing. In addition, it is my understanding that the accuracy of our tests is the best in the world.

I agree that social distancing doesn’t work so well in enclosed spaces and recirculated air. That is why it is so hazardous to ride the subway in New York and connecting substations. To illustrate the relative danger, I offer the following data:

Based on active cases and population of state, what are the chances the next person you have contact with will have COVID-19?

In New York (20 M Pop.)
1.221 % chance of contact with person with COVID-19

In New Jersey (9 M Pop.)
1.274 % chance of contact with person with COVID-19

In Ohio (11.7 M Pop.)
0.156 % chance of contact with person with COVID-19

In Florida (21.5 Pop. M)
0.155 % chance of contact with person with COVID-19

In Nevada (3 M Pop.)
0.072 % chance of contact with person with COVID-19

In Oklahoma (4 M Pop.)
0.030 % chance of contact with person with COVID-19

In Montana (1 M Pop.)
0.004 % chance of contact with person with COVID-19
