The #1 pick is in -- Myles Garrett

IMO Garrett is better than Mingo was coming out of the NCAA tier in pretty much every single way. We were talking ourselves up with Mingo right from the start. We dream of killing Big Ben because he's made us look like garbage for over a decade. Anyone who can get at him will become a hero.

If we can generate a pass rush, sacks will be had. The issue was we have not really been able to do that. Hopefully with the changes we've made, that will be different this year.

Oh absolutely. Honestly it is no comparison for me. Mingo's biggest problem was and still is his lack of size, and that was the biggest concern we had about him coming out of the draft. I don't think anyone is worried about a lack of size problem with big Myles.

It may be true that Garrett is better in every way than Mingo, but the idea with Mingo was speed and Roethlisberger made Mingo and all that talk about Mingo's speed look silly with his quick passes from one step drops. Hell, he had the ball out before Mingo could take a second step.

As for getting to Roethlisberger with a pass rush, you might want to remember that he operates behind one of the best offensive lines in the league. So here is the deal. We basically know what we have on offense, particularly if Kessler is our quarterback. And we also know that Pittsburgh has a excellent defense. So how do you beat him?

I submit that the only way to beat Roethlisberger is simply to play sound defense and keep him from scoring touchdowns. Forget stunts that open your defense to what Roethlisberger does best. Just play sound defense. I don't know if we have a defense that can do it, but I am convinced that that is what it will take to beat him. If we ever get ahead of him, and he is playing catchup, then we might take a chance and go for a sack. Otherwise, forget the stunts. Just keep him from scoring.

In the past even when guys had chances to sack Ben, poor tackling allowed him to basically bounce off of would be tacklers and still make plays.

Very true. And we are hoping, with some justification, that that is the difference between Mingo and Garrett. But don't expect success if you stunt on the first play. When you do that, Ben will make you pay. Just play solid defense and wait, at least, until he is in a passing situation.

I don't think Williams will just sit back and wait. From what I know about his past defenses, he brings it.

With any luck, our press coverage will be back if this pass rush operates as intended. For too long, we've been asking our corners to cover forever. As a result, we've played a lot of off coverage in hoping to avoid giving up big plays and it has made the underneath game much too easy for quarterbacks to hit.

I'm hopeful we get immediate impact from Garrett and Ogbah takes a step. That's going to bring out the best in Shelton, too. It would allow our DBs to get more aggressive if we can trust our pass rush to be in the fact of a QB before he's got time to take a deep shot from a clean pocket. Even knowing that we could be in range of hitting him is an eye opening result.

We're in a strong position with Kirksey and Collins, too. They are excellent blitzing linebackers, but we've lacked the ability to bully the offensive line in to surrendering blitzing lanes without consistently losing the integrity of the offensive line, giving a guy like Ben a nice lane to step up.

Last year we gave up 4.6 per run (31st) for 142 yards (31st) and 498 rushing attempts (31st). Hopefully our new additions and experience can help us shut down the run.

Sound defense is right. Keep it simple. Shut down the run, pressure the quarterback. We do that, we can beat anyone.

Good gravy D lineman move fast anymore. I ought to be kicked out of the human race by comparison. #TooEmbarressedToBelong

Here's the video of Garrett blowing by Thomas. By the way Kessler did a pretty good job at dumping that ball off to Crow...

So the folks writing the headline for the video didn't watch it since it wasn't a sack. Secondly are we really getting excited over a play not in full pads?

Sorry for taking pleasure in the positive. May I smile at least? Geeeesh

Nothing wrong with taking some pleasure in it, and I didn't say there was. But the over exaggerated reaction by the Browns staff posting the video (labeling it what it isn't), and the making it out to be more than it is a bit silly. Take it for what it is, a nice play on a practice play, not in full pads. It's a positive, just on a very small scale

The Browns staff didn't post it. If you're not familiar with Browns Chalk Talk, this is who they are:

For the past 20 years, training camp IS my Browns season. The fun ends when the regular season begins. Most seasons I start paying attention to other NFL teams and college football when September rolls around.
